AHHHH-CHOOOOO..AND OTHER SPRING GOODIES….

As we head into Spring, I begin to think about green fairways and the blooming flowers planted in the yard.  In the high country, it’s time for those surprise spring storms so, skiing is still on my radar.  Enter the Colorado Double – Double…….ski for a few hours and then hit the golf course.

Unfortunately, it is also time for spring allergies to rear their ugly heads.  I am one of those people who suffer from these pesky allergies.  Luckily mine are not very severe and I do manage to Rambo through (I’m the one with the attractive runny eyes and snivel constantly)!  I’ve done a bit of research and, have learned a few interesting things about this annoying annual problem.

    The main cause of these allergies is pollen and the pollen is coming from trees not from flowers.  Flowers pollenate through insects, not from airborne particles.  In our neck of the woods (Thank you Al Roker), these trees are mostly Cottonwoods.  Our golf course is gorgeous with flowers around tee boxes and the Clubhouse and tree lined fairways.  These are invariably cottonwoods and when they bloom, the fairways can look almost snow covered.  Other trees that are pollen culprits are oak, mulberry, maple and birch.

One of the keys to beating spring allergies is to start taking allergy medications about 2 weeks before the start of the pollen season.  If you have respiratory problems such as asthma, COPD, and emphysema, you should be in constant contact with your physician.  Once symptoms begin, it is difficult to get rid of them.  In my case, I almost never have allergy problems unless it is on the golf course in the spring.  Needless to say, my golf bag always contains some type of allergy medication.
