PRIVATE BOAT ON THE PEMBA RIVER IN INDIA

I WHINED AT THE CAPTAIN FOR THREE DAYS BEFORE HE LET ME DRIVE!

One of the most interesting trips we’ve taken was to a part of India not many foreigners find their way to. We’d arranged to take a “reed” boat (each reed boat is individual in it’s design and layout) down the Pemba River. Our boat was a “suite” type boat with a small crew (Captain, Chef, Concierge). Our only request was that we NOT dock or travel into any areas where we would see other “tourists”. True to the crew’s word, we were the only boat for long stretches of the lush shoreline.

Life here is almost “frozen in time”…the only school buses or transportation you see are the “snake” boats which are hand-made in local shops. And, when the surroundings got truly sparse…the few locals we did see were excited about having us take their photos with our iPhones or Camera. They had little idea of all of the technology we take for granted. Our ring tones were the ONLY sounds you heard for miles around. The women still wash their pots and clothing in the river. And, of course, we got brief glances of family bath time in the same river.

Here are some shots from our trip:

OUR BOAT AND CAPTAIN
TYPICAL HOUSING ALONG THE RIVER
APOLOGIES FOR THE BLUR….AS WE FLOATED BY, THE PEOPLE WOULD YELL AND WAVE
GIRL CATHOLIC SCHOOL BUS ON THE WATER
POTS AND DISHES ARE STILL WASHED IN THE RIVER BY HAND
OUR MEALS WERE ALL PREPARED ON THE BOAT WITH LOCAL FRESH FOOD
THE CHURCHES ALONG THE RIVER ARE LARGE, HAND-PAINTED PIECES OF ART. THE SCHOOL CHILDREN SIT ON THE FLOOR AND DO THEIR HOMEWORK.
OUR CAPTAIN ON RIGHT … WANTED US TO MEET HIS FAMILY. THEY ALL LIVE TOGETHER IN ROUGHLY 300 SQ FT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FORREST
HAVE I MENTIONED THE HUMIDITY…HAIR AS BIG AS DALLAS! THIS LITTLE GIRL RAN UP TO THE BOAT AND BEGGED TO HAVE A PHOTO. THE PEOPLE ALONG THE RIVER WERE SO SWEET AND WELCOMING.
ANOTHER OF THEIR STUNNING CHURCHES ALONG THE RIVER
THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT
Mr Flexibility was having quite a time on this one!!
TUK TUKS ARE THE PREFERRED METHOD OF TRANSPORTATION GETTING BACK TO TOWN

HAVE ANY OF YOU DONE THIS RIVER TRIP? DID YOU HAVE A GOOD EXPERIENCE IN INDIA? DID YOU LOVE OR HATE INDIA?
